Who we are
Hi there! I’m Edwin Sorto, and this space, Mr. Sorto’s Class, is where I bring together two of my greatest passions: teaching and Latin dance. Born in El Salvador and coming to the U.S. as a teenager, I discovered early on how the universal language of movement, rhythm and culture can help us belong, express ourselves, and grow.
In my classroom, we move. We learn. We celebrate. I believe deeply that when students engage with art, physical expression, language and culture, not just as add-ons, but as core parts of the school day, they build confidence, curiosity and character. One of my favorite moments: showing young kids their first salsa step, seeing their faces light up, and realizing “Hey — I can do this.”
Here are what I hold as non-negotiables:
Creativity & Joy Lessons should surprise, delight and connect to real life. Dance, art and movement are tools for engagement. (Kids deserve fun and challenge.)
Discipline & Grit Mastering a routine, showing up with a positive attitude, working hard to improve: these are the same skills you use in a dance room or in a math class.
Cultural Pride & Connection My students don’t just learn steps. They explore Latin rhythms, African roots of the dance, and how movement reflects our stories.
Community & Belonging Everyone gets to move, everyone gets to shine. My goal: each student walks out of class feeling known, valued and capable.
Growth Mindset & Opportunity Whether you’re learning cha-cha-cha, a new Spanish word, or your first art technique, the message is: you can try, you can stumble, you can rise. Hidden talents deserve light.
If you’re here because you’re curious about what we dance, create or explore, welcome! You’re invited to connect, watch what’s happening, and hopefully join the movement. Let’s make space for rhythm, for voice, for confidence, and for joy.
